crafty messes at home

This past week was Spring Break for my second-grader and we made all kinds of messes while he was at home.  Care to see a few of them???

First up, a little kitchen mess. . . .flour, water, uncooked rice. . . they had as much fun making it, as they did playing with it. (Wait - maybe making it WAS playing with it!)

And these pictures were before we started adding sprinkles in to it.  (That, my friends was sort of a disaster, because the rainbow colors started bleeding all over the place. The mess became messier at that point.)

The recipe I used called for 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of water, and 3/4 cups of rice.  It was definitely too much water.  I'd suggest adding the water one cup at a time, and adjust slowwwwwly until you have the consistency you want.

Next up - crayon making!

We collected all our broken crayons, peeled them, and then one color at a time, we began melting them down.  I've done the kind where you put the broken crayons in a muffin tin, and put it in the oven.  That works great for multi-colored crayons, but we really wanted to use a shaped ice cube tray, so we tried this instead.
Basically, we set up a double boiler with a tin can, inside simmering water within in a small pot.  Once the crayons were melted, we just poured then into our ice cube trays and set them to cool.

I learned an important lesson - you NEED to spray the ice cube tray with cooking spray first.  This entire tray of crayons ended up broken, because they stuck.  I remelted them, but I was not happy about it!!!!  And I'm not sure my Ikea heart ice cube tray will EVER be the same again!

And finally. . .Easter eggs! Probably the least messy activity of the three.  No major disasters or spills.  (My eight-year-old still has slightly blue fingernails from dipping them with his fingers, but OH WELL!)

This week, the big kid heads back to school, and the little one and I will get back to our usual routine at home.  Hopefully I can fit in some craft time for ME this week, after I get my house put back together!
Have a great day! Hey - Happy APRIL!!!!!
xoxo

This looked like a lot of fun. I hope someone came over and cleaned up the mess each time! That is often the hardest part!

You are a good good mommie! I am so proud!
