Hello crafty friends! I got a box of Spellbinders goodies last week and I couldn't wait to bust into it! The Large Peonies from the Just Add Color collection by Stephanie Low are so beautiful and can be colored in so many ways. Today I'd like to share one of my favorite ways to color images, especially bold florals like these.

To begin, stamp the flowers on white cardstock, using black ink. Then, begin layering on some pale pink and purple colors onto the flowers using FSJ Color Splash Watercolor Pencils. There's no need to worry about shading or making dark colors. It's just a base layer of color. Next, add some teal and green to the leaves - again, just a thin base layer of color.
When it's dry, go back with a slightly darker shade of purple, and a slightly darker green. Build up the color a bit, following the shaded lines on the stamp - the stamp will show you where the dark areas should be. When in doubt, darken the areas that would be in the shadows - anything that's under something else, and along the bottom of an image.
Once that second layer of watercolor is dry, then we have some crazy fun. Take some colored pencils (Journey Color Burst Pure Color pencils are my favorite!) and begin scribbling and shading, and adding some details. I added darker color at the base of the leaves, and the deepest parts of the flowers. And then I just got a little crazy scribbling. I love the extra texture and interest the pencil adds. And it really makes these bold flowers POP. After everything is done, trim flowers and assemble card. I adhered all my pieces with foam squares, onto a white panel of cardstock, that I added a little sponged Lovely Blue ink onto to. Subtle, but perfect rather than the stark white.
I love the dimension and texture that the layers of color adds. I finished it off with a few Sweet Candy Drops, and a splatter of black Silk. This same layout and process would work with so many stamps, and colors. And every one would look completely different. If you feel inspired to try combining layers of watercolor and colored pencils, I'd love to see what you create! Leave me a link in the comments and I will stop by and see your project!
