Card Making Idea: Unicorn Card with a Watercolor Rainbow

Hey there my crafty peeps, how are you today? I am completely in love with my new little watercolor tins and I am watercoloring all of the things lately. Today, I have a fun little rainbow idea to share with you, featuring the Magical Unicorn stamps from FSJ + Spellbinders. You can use this idea with whatever type of watercolor medium you have - even liquid dye inks. Are you ready to take a look with me?

Today's background is one of those techniques that will never ever turn out the same way twice. You can do it over and over again and it will unique and magical each time.

This technique is sort of a back and forth between paint and water. Here's what I do:

  • Lightly mist a sheet of watercolor paper with water. (It just gives it a slightly damp starting point.)
  • Make a small puddle of water on the paper and brush it around just a bit.
  • Add paint to brush, and lightly touch that puddle of water. When the paint hits that puddle of water, it's going to do amazing things - bleed, spread, puddle up. Just PLAY with it. Brush the paint around, or let it bleed into the wet spots on it's own.
  • As you add more puddles of color, they'll blend and bleed into each other, and it's absolutely beautiful. Want the colors to blend less? Let it dry more in between. Want a giant swirl of blended colors? Work quickly and layer it all on.

As you can see for this background, I loosely formed wide diagonal stripes of color as I blended and worked. I also splattered some Sparkle Silk along the way. Depending on if you splatter it while it's wet or dry, it'll react differently - so I do both! I also brushed a little diluted color over the mane of the unicorn, and painted a little Sparkle Silk on top.

To finish off the card, I added die cut clouds from vellum, rhinestones, and a few other little stamped images and a sentiment. It feels dreamy and magical and perfect for a birthday girl, don't you think?

You can use whatever supplies you have to make this idea your own. Watercolor pencils, liquid dye ink, even a good old Crayola school watercolor set - but I'll link up all of my supplies below if you'd like to take a closer look.

Have you done much watercoloring? Is it something that feels scary to you, or fun as can be? Let me know in the comments! I'm so grateful you stopped by today! xoxo

Supplies on Today's Card:

Small Water Blending Brush  (This is one of my favorite tools. it comes in three brush sizes. Fill it with water and then pick up a little bit of paint with the brush. Squeeze it to release more water. You can also fill it with ink or diluted paint!

PS. Have you checked the Coming Soon section on the Spellbinders website lately? You'll find the brand new Buzzworthy Collection there with super cute stamps + a honeycomb stencil!

That is a perfect background for that unicorn, especially with the vellum cards. Love it and will use this idea for an upcoming birthday for a special girl who loves unicorns!
