Spread Your Wings - Embossed Butterflies with Colorful Inky Backgrounds

Welcome to Day 3 of the Lil' Inker Designs blog hop! We've spent the week celebrating the latest stamp and die release, which features beautiful butterflies as well as some tropical fun. Today I'd like to share two cards featuring the Spread Your Wings stamp set, along with a colorful inked background technique.

To try out this inky technique, you'll need two or three colors of ink, plus a sponge or two. (I used FSJ's Cool Pool, and Electric Lime True Color Fusion inks and a couple of sponge daubers.)

First, pick up some ink onto your sponge. I find that often I get way too much ink on the cardstock at first, so before I start adding color to the cardstock, I sponge off a bit of color onto scrap paper first. This helps the color go on more subtly, and allows you to build up the color gradually.

Next, gently begin adding color to the cardstock, in a super light circular motion, almost like you're trying to add puffy clouds. (Does that make sense?) You want the color light and loose.

Then, once you have the first color down, repeat the same process with a second and third color to fill in most of the panel. It's okay to let the colors overlap (in fact you might want to overlap them a lot!) I like to leave a little white around the edges.

To finish the card base, I stamped the sentiment and solid butterflies. Then I embossed the larger butterflies onto another sheet of white cardstock. I inked over them with shades of yellow and orange ink, and then fussy cut them. I attached them with foam squares for lots of fun dimension! They look like they're about to fly off the card, don't they!? Before I called it completely done, I added some dimensional glaze and glitter to the solid butterflies, a few sequins, and splatter of FSJ Silk.

This second card (which I think I actually did first) uses the same technique but I filled the whole panel with color, and used some pink and orange ink instead. For this card, I embossed the sentiment and butterfly onto the panel directly, and inked color right on top.
